Oahu papaya farmer Ken Kamiya was recently interviewed by a Washington D.C. TV station about Hawaii’s genetically modified papaya. Kamiya was an exhibitor at the 2011 BIO International Convention in D.C., where he passed out samples of his GM papaya. More than a decade ago, papaya growers like Kamiya were struggling to save their crops from the deadly papaya ring spot virus. The industry was saved thanks to genetically modified papaya, which was resistant to the virus.
