Letter: Statistics show benefits of genetic engineering

It is difficult to see threats from biotech crops when pesticide usage in the U.S. has dropped by millions of pounds a year due to genetically engineered crops and world biotech crop acreage plantings are now over 308 million acres annually.  Even the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, an arm of the Vatican, gave its blessing to genetically modified crops this year at a conference in Rome. The academy praised GM food for holding a great potential to improve the lives of the poor.
