While Some Consumers Call for Labels, the FDA and Scientists Emphasize the Safety of GM Foods

While some consumers would like genetically modified foods to be labeled, the FDA and others in the scientific community underline the fact that foods produced using genetic modification are completely safe, and that labeling is unnecessary. Ruth MacDonald, professor and chairwoman of the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department at Iowa State University, points out that many consumers do not understand what genetic modification means, and are wary of a scientific approach to food. MacDonald, a spokesperson for the FDA and other scientists and researchers interviewed emphasize that safety is paramount, and that foods produced using genetic engineering are indeed safe.
